Fraser Me!

Last December saw me heading up to Fraser Island, on the eastern coast of tropical(ish) Queensland. This trip was for a conference, which required a fair bit of effort and even more stress, getting to. Conference was very good, I achieved what I went to do and saw just a little bit more of Australia.

Here's a summary of points of interest about the trip (apart from the science which I won't go into):

1. The journey there took 12 hours: beginning with a bus ride at 5.20 am, 1 flight, 2 train trips, another bus ride and a ferry trip.

2. The journey back took less effort but more pain since I was severely dehydrated, hung over, hungry, and at one point, busting to pee.

3. Went birdwatching. Now developed a better appreciation and a keener sense for our winged friends.

4. Since Fraser Island is a sand island, I had my first experience of 4WD-ing over sand. And appreciating how difficult it is seeing all the inexperienced backpackers getting bogged in sand. There's something to be said about careening down the beach at high speed though.

5. The said 4WD tour involved a very Oz bloke named Murray- or Mezza (?). He was very sweet, very informative and I truly enjoyed my nature jaunt with him. It's almost like walking through a doco, narrated by a David Attenborough with an Okka accent.

Here are some pictures:

Me and Kyles on beautiful Lake Mckenzie. It's an inland, highland, natural lake with high mineral content- good for the skin apparently. A natural spa soak!

The Woongoolbver Creek at Central Station- previously barred from men- sacred to Aboriginal women who come here to give birth because the water was pure and clean. I kinda like the thought. The rivers' water were so clear that it's as if it's not there!

And finally- the mad drive down the beach! Look out for that plane!

Victoria, Australia

During Mum's recent visit to Australia, we did a fair bit of traveling. In her 5 weeks stay here, I think we did more than 5000 km around Victoria and New South Wales. A graphical representation of the places we went to: I know the map above can be customized with Google map, but I don't know how, dammit! Techonolgy, sigh... Some of our highlights: 1. Saw most of Victoria's attractions. 2. Went from oh, total driving mileage in Melbourne = 5 km to scoring a massive 900 kms during our drive up to Sydney. It was fantastic because I've never done it before, we've pushed ourselves to drive overnight after a day of work and there's just something magical being on the road in a tiny 2-door Ford at 3 am. 3. Went to Dimboola, which is a small small country town, (population: 1700) from which Sonya hails from. Mom and I had such a wonderful time, I'm in love with her parents and it's just such a different experience! 4. Took a lot of photographs. Will post them w...

I'm a dork, I am!!

Hahaha.. I just discovered my old photos. Taken in Cherating with Gordie, SK, and Ping- 2004, July. I was...26! I love these photos. We drove overnight to Cherating, stayed up whole night to watch the sunrise and waited for the turtles to nest.... while having beer of course. And up to silly antics as usual.. This was the good ol' days before PhD, babies, girlfriends and boyfriends- when we could all still stay up late, and climb coconut trees. And no matter how hard I try- I just could not look not-dorky. I love you guys!

Long delayed photographs of Sydney

Hmm. I am on a roll.. am beset by urges to do anything except work- is that called procrastination? So, here they are. Selected photographs taken with Farrah's Canon E05, SLR of Sydney while I was there in January. Taken on 13 April 2008: View of the Sydney Opera House and the Harbour Bridge, taken from the Botanical Gardens, on a late afternoon after the rain. Love the skyline and the dramatic clouds. It is actually the same day- but how the sky is different. One of my favourite shots. I actually made a short note of the my mood at the time- it reads: Today is gorgeous. Rained for an hour and now the everything is awashed with the after-the-rain dampness and also, crispness. The air smells wonderful and it just feels so peaceful. Everything feels cleansed and renewed. Nature is beautiful. St. Mary's Cathedral- also after the rain Three fine gentlemen at the Botanical Gardens Away from nature- I like this shot. Taken at the King's Cross (duh) train station. Next on the prog...
